To provide financial assistance and promotion of high school graduates who have exhibited exemplary leadership, vision, and passion that is blazing a trail for others to follow and changing lives in their community and in the art community.

Our mother, Jan E. Dowden was an amateur artist.  She passed in 2014 and with her passing, her love of art and helping others has remained utmost in our hearts.  She was an inspiration to myself and my two siblings as well as those in the communities in which she lived.  She was born in San Antonio, Texas to a middle class, blue collar mother and father.   Her upbringing was a simple and ordinary one, but along the way she was always devoted to the communities she lived in, helping others and taking local art classes when available.  These art classes were a respite for her, making her feel validated and somehow more grounded.  With the help of my community, myself and my siblings, this scholarship is lovingly dedicated to her, our precious mother.
